THE OPPORTUNITY – Our client is a low volume, high mix manufacturer and distributor of highly engineered and unique special application products serving the transportation industry.  As their  Director of Operations, you will lead a team of established managers that are individually, and jointly responsible for guiding their teams to achieve operational excellence.  Culturally, all members of the operations team put safety first, care about the people they work with and aren’t afraid to learn from their mistakes. There is a healthy sense of urgency to continually develop new and innovative solutions and improve processes. Teams actively celebrate success when new product and process improvement milestones are met. Direct reports include a Continuous Improvement Manager, Production Manager, Master Scheduler, and Distribution Center Manager. You will report to the Chief Operating Officer and communicate daily with leaders in purchasing, sales, HR, finance, engineering and scheduling. You will represent the operations group (production, quality, continuous improvement, scheduling, inventory, safety, lean, distribution, maintenance) on the executive team.


Specific responsibilities include:

  • Continually seeking out and implementing ways to add customer value through lean manufacturing practices
  • Fostering a culture that embraces never ending continuous improvement with safety being the top priority
  • Aligning operational resources to ensure products are delivered on time and on budget
  • Ensuring metrics updates are completed by each department on time and corrective action is taken when goal and actual are out of alignment
  • Developing operational strategy, communicating strategy and assigning tactical responsibilities that are easily understood, executable and measurable
  • Developing and enforcing standard work procedures to prevent production bottlenecks, ensure quality standards are met, facilities are properly maintained, and production schedules are met
  • Transform the operations group into one that embraces visual management and lean practices.
  • Identify and train “future leaders”




  • Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field
  • ERP user knowledge
  • Operations management experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Solid lean and six sigma experience
  • Has participated in fostering a continuous improvement culture
  • Understands project management
  • Has owned operational strategic planning
  • Understands manufacturing dashboard metrics
  • Has a clear understanding of OSHA standards
  • Has an understanding of purchasing and inventory management to GAP
  • Understands quality management, cost of quality and ISO
