Mercy Health has retained WorldBridge Partners to recruit a new Vice President, Finance for the Mercy Health Joplin Community located in Joplin, MO. Mercy has been named for the second year in a row (2016, 2017) as a top 15 Health System by Truven Health AnalyticsMercy is ranked in the top five for large health systems.

The System: Mercy was founded in 1986 by the Sisters of Mercy, but the systems heritage goes back more than 185 years.  Sisters of Mercy was founded by Catherine McAuley in 1827 in Dublin, Ireland.  In 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States.  In 1871, they traveled to St. Louis, beginning what would today be known as MercyMercy was the 8th Largest Catholic Health System in the United States in 2016.  Mercy providers & facilities serve patients in Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and has outreach ministries in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.  In addition, Mercy’s Virtual Care Center (Telehealth); Mercy’s Supply Chain ROi (Provider owned Accountable Supply Chain Organization); and Mercy Technology Services’ (Epic); serve 240 plus hospitals across 28 states

The Mercy Health Joplin Community: Mercy Health Joplin Communities include Mercy Hospital Joplin (240 Beds, 1400 Employees), Mercy Clinic Joplin (130 Providers), Mercy Hospital Carthage (25 Bed CAH – Carthage, MO), Mercy Hospital Fort Scott (46 Beds – Fort Scott, KS), and Mercy Hospital Columbus (20 Bed CAH – Columbus, KS).  The community includes 9 counties located in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

History of Mercy Joplin: Mercy Hospital Joplin, formerly known as St. John’s Regional Medical Center was acquired by Mercy from CHI in 2009.  On May 22, 2011 the hospital and community were devastated by an F5 tornado.  Mercy committed to rebuilding.  In April 2015 a 900,000 square foot, $435M replacement facility opened (four times the size of the previous facility) to serve Joplin’s growing needs; the new hospital features unprecedented “storm hardened” safety features.

The Position: Vice President, Finance (Mercy Health Joplin Community)
Report to: Scott Reynolds, CFO Mercy Central (Springfield, MO – 4 yrs current position, 35 yrs system)

Key Responsibilities: Financial oversight for all of Mercy Health Joplin Communities. Matrix reporting relationship to Mercy Hospital Joplin President & Mercy Clinic Joplin President.  All finance staff across community will directly or indirectly report to VP Finance (Designated community CFO per org. chart). 
What to expect 1st six months: 1. Executive Orientation Program (and additional training) 2. Ensure budget initiatives are on track 3. Implement new and/or enhanced turn around plan 4. Fall Budget planning (5 yr capital, long range)

Software: Accounting System – Lawson ERP; Billing/Clinical - Epic

Travel: Less than 25%, Travel to Springfield and/or St Louis 2 to 3 times per year; Fort Scott Board Meeting Quarterly.

The Region: As the commercial, medical and cultural hub of a four state region, Joplin offers quality of life amenities rare in a city of its size, providing services for more than 8 times its population.  Located just 7 miles from the Kansas border, 10 miles from the Oklahoma border and 50 miles from Arkansas, Joplin attracts thousands of daily visitors for work, shopping, and entertainment.  During the day, the population swells to more than 200K.  A diverse and brisk economy supports the needs of industry in the rapidly growing region.  A highly diversified manufacturing base provides almost 23% of the jobs in the Joplin area.  As a regional provider of medical services, Joplin employs more than 4K people in healthcare.  The trucking industry represents another major employer, since Joplin is considered the “Crossroads of America”.  There are opportunities for all ages in Joplin, the region has grown and expects to continue to do so. 

Cost of Living/Real Estate: Affordable – Per several cost of living comparison sites, Joplin rates below the national average is it relates to overall cost of living and cost of housing.  Per both & – a reasonable inventory of homes available.  Moving to the region affords an opportunity for someone to purchase a home in town, or if interested an acreage outside of town. 

Climate Data: Annual High Temp – 69.3 F; Annual Low Temperature – 47.6 F; Average annual rainfall 46 inches (Most May-June); Average annual snowfall 13 inches (Dec – Feb); Coldest Month Jan (High 45F, Low 25F); Warmest Month July (High 91F, Low 70F).

What’s neededTraditional CFO (CPA preferred, financial expert), Detail Oriented, Able to provide analysis & trending, Understanding & supportive of the ministry (& mission), Collaborative, Previous Experience in an Integrated Health System Ideal, Leader – someone the Leaders can rally around, Personable/Likeable, Team player & builder, Goal Oriented

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Masters Preferred

Certification: CPA (Preferred - not required)

Experience: Minimum of Five (5) years experience in a financial management position for a hospital or large healthcare organization.  Public accounting experience preferred. Advanced computer knowledge, financial analysis, healthcare billing and reimbursement knowledge required.
